The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), a part of the Department of Commerce (DOC), has received 95 requests to add additional products to the current list of steel and aluminum derivatives under Section 232. Adding these products would result in 50% tariffs being assessed when the goods are imported into the US. The list of derivative products is already both lengthy and wide-ranging, and these additions would significantly broaden the list of products for which the additional tariffs would be assessed.
There are numerous requests to add molds of various types as a derivative, as well as requests for the addition of other industrial products. One of the requests covers a large number of machines used to manufacture various products. Auto parts, tooling, and electrical components are included in the list of possible additions.
Consumer products are not spared in the list of requested additions. If approved, additional furniture products and some lamp fittings will be added, as well as some cookware products. Canned foods and beverages appear in a number of the listed requests.
On previous occasions, the BIS approved nearly all of the requested additions, so importers need to be aware that more products may soon fall under the additional tariffs. The list of products for which the BIS has received inclusion requests can be viewed here. Comments supporting or opposing the inclusion requests must be submitted through regulations.gov no later than October 21.
