The White House has issued more information regarding the previously announced tariffs on certain furniture products. Originally, the tariffs were to take effect on October 1, but the new implementation date is October 14, with increases scheduled for January 1, 2026. As expected, these tariffs are part of a larger Section 232 investigation for timber and lumber products.
Effective October 14, the following tariffs will be assessed globally, while some countries will be given preferential tariff rates:
Favorable rates will be given to the UK, Japan, and the countries of the EU, based on trade agreements and similar to reductions in place for other Section 232 tariffs. The president stated that the Section 232 tariffs on products from the UK will not exceed 10%, while the tariffs for Japan and the EU countries will not exceed 15%. Furthermore, it was stated that countries that enter into negotiations to address the threat of wood products to our national security may receive lower tariff increases.
It should be noted that, as with other Section 232 actions, the list of affected products could be expanded. Information on the products covered by this action can be found here.
